‘Chief’ Chair from Africa

UPDATE: 4/11/2024

The Chair is now happy in it’s new home in Washington state, with Sam. After a refinish job, the chair was shipped to Sam. He assembled it and sent pic.

Original post: (actually, These are instructions for Sam to reassemble the chair)

Our Friends Roger and Malia bought this chair while they were working in Africa. Now that they are moving onto another adventure, this chair ended up at our house. It needed a bit of love, so I gave it a sanding and a refinish. Even after marking where all the parts go, I still spent two hours trying to assemble it.

Parts list:

1 Inner frame (back)

1 Outer Frame (bottom)

2 Arms

2 Bottom brace

1 Fabric Back (sling)

2 Sticks

a bunch of nuts and bolts

Notes:

Frame part (x2) – double slats are the ‘top’
Parts have been ladled (carved into the wood) “A” faces “A”. The letter sides touch.

Here are the assembly instructions.

Set the frame up as show in picture, Narrow frame inside of wider, outer frame.

Now, add one of the bottom base struts, and attach to each frame (joints G and E)

Add the other side now: F and H

should look like this.

Now, lay it down.

Make sure it looks like the pic above. Both base units attached, and you have the correct parts ‘on top’ Only lightly tighten the nuts and bols.

Also – make sure you only loosely tighten the bolts, and point the ‘pokey’ end away from the chair. Tat way you wont get scraped up while sitting in chair.

Now Add the Arms – first attach one arm to Bottom section (outer frame) A and then B

Now attach Arms to the back portion (inner frame) C and D

Almost there !!!!!

Feed the seat cloth (sling) through the upper and lower double bars and insert the stick.

By now, you will most likely be wavering between full blown frustration and a low level screaming hysteria. Go relax with a calming beverage.
